My grandfather was a photographer. When I was a child, I never had an interest in what he was doing. He would be focusing, adjusting, clicking away and I never cared. Once, I even ruined an entire roll of negatives by sneaking under the blanket where he was meticulously working. I let in too much light; at the time I didn’t understand how precious the light was. Back then there was no enjoyment in finding that special moment through the lens and now… I wonder what those photos could have been.
The importance of photography didn’t hit me until later, when I was holding a random photo of our family. It showed a perfect frozen moment and I was left wondering how we all changed so much. Were my brothers really ever that little? Oh, and I totally forgot my mom had this dress! It was my favorite, I loved it on her. Was my fashion sense really ever so abhorrent that I ever liked those dated shoes? But, look how sweetly I’m kissing my little brother on the cheek! Through my grandfather’s lens there was a tiny world, a tiny memory, that would last forever.

Having lived and worked in Europe, Asia and Africa for the last 12 years and having moved to Cairo directly from Paris, France, I had a unique chance to see real emotions, tears of happiness, sincere smiles and true love.
